If you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary, a little beyond the typical, “Let’s meet for cocktails,” girls night out, tryReconsider Tequila, the new tequila pairing dinner series by Sol Cocina in Newport Beach. Forget everything you think you know about “shots and margaritas.” Reconsider Tequila is a new way of looking at what many Americans view as a very one-dimensional beverage. Held on a Wednesday every month in Sol’s intimate and private “La Cava” room, Reconsider Tequila dinners are a great opportunity to chill out and enjoy a leisurely dinner with your girl group. Plus, only $50 per person (before tax and gratuity) covers all of your tequila and food for the evening, a fantastic value for this offbeat treat.
The evening starts out with tray passed appetizers and a “design your own tequila cocktail” bar (don’t worry, you’ll be assisted by one of Sol’s expert mixologists), giving guests the opportunity to sample and mingle before sitting down. Next, Sol Cocina Executive Chef Deborah “Deb” Schneider works closely with any one of Sol’s 80 tequila partners to perfectly pair a prix fix five-course meal of contemporary and gourmet interpretations of Baja street cuisine with top shelf tequila, such as OC local upstart brand, Azunia. Deb walks the group through each course, explaining and describing the menu selections in the way that only “The reigning queen of San Diego chefs,” (Bon Appetit Magazine) can. Chef Schneider’s obvious passion for Baja cuisine and her unassuming surfer-girl attitude are part of the evening’s charm. You’ll also receive expert descriptions on the Mexican art of tequila making and walk away with a new appreciation and understanding of the complexity and flavor of tequila blanca, tequila reposado and tequila anejo. Not to give away too much, but would you ever think you’d be pairing tequila with a rich chocolate dessert? What’s more, did you ever think you would like it? By the end of the meal, not only will you be sipping straight tequila like fine wine, you’ll be tempted to invite Chef Schneider to your next girls’ night out!
